Restore is a command that goes back over 30 yrs I believe. Along with ditto and others.

If you used a backup program like Retrospect, you'd probably have to use that. DU Restore works fine (but that is very new).

So does TriBackup or CCC or any OS X compliant program or utility. But having tested Drive 10 and TechTool Pro I found them 'wanting.' The normal method in the manner I was brought up was to dump files to two tapes during one pass. When you are reading and writing to/from the same drive you are getting a lot of head movement, seeks, and less than half the drive's rated performance. Even half full my ATA drive gets 57MB/sec, more on SCSI drives. Half of either means you are running at less than 30MB/sec.You HAVE to (or should get people in the habit) of backing up FIRST. It seems like trouble, but it has always been faster to just reinitialize.

OS X is actually easy. Pro XProduct Description:Synchronize! Pro X is specifically engineered for OS X, taking advantage of the modern properties of the new operating system, such as pre-emptive multitasking, and supporting the full capabilities of the file system, including 255-character Unicode file names and OS X file permissions.

Files are copied at the maximum speed possible, using pre-emptive multitasking to full advantage. It makes bootable backups of OS X system disks, without logging in as 'root'.

Old files can be archived rather than deleted. What's new in this version:. This update is free for anyone with a license purchased within the last two years; otherwise, a license renewal must be purchased. Added a 'Ask Finder to eject disks' check box to the General preferences page. Fixed a problem which caused double-clicks to not be noticed in the Files To Copy window on some systems. Fixed a problem which could occur when there was more than one entry in the 'Copy files' or 'Don't copy files' by name settings.

Fixed creation of conflict folders when 'Multiple Items' is enabled. The path of conflict folders is now logged. The paths of conflicting files are now logged. Fixed a problem in which files with name conflicts weren't being moved to the Conflicts Folder. Fixed a problem which occurred when the Files To Copy window was made very large and the available monitor size is smaller the next time the application is opened. The window is now limited in size under these conditions.

For a more complete version history. I have one disk drive that is nothing but various clean, test, working, and spare partitions JUST for OS X boot systems.I also keep a small emergency OS X boot volume on drives. And I have been known to partition just to put large DVD files and archive files away. Not that you don't, won't, can't partition.

But if I wanted to move those partitions around are resize them. Then I'd turn to Synchronize Pro X or something.Never had trouble with DU Restore no matter what size the volumes, as long as the files fit.

Apple Disk UtilityApple has a critical warning about the possibility of data loss using pre-Tiger utilities with the new operating system:To avoid issues with a Mac OS X 10.4 volume, do not use disk utility software that was released before Tiger (late April, 2005) with it. If you do, the software might report false errors or attempt 'repairs' that could lead to data loss.Third-party disk utility software includes Alsoft DiskWarrior, Micromat Tech Tool, and Symantec Norton Disk Doctor. Consult third-party utility manufacturers to find out which software versions are compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.You can use Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.3.9 -and only version 10.3.9- to check or repair a Mac OS X 10.4 volume. A disk repair application that's not Mac OS X 10.4-aware may incorrectly report Extended Attributes as directory damage. You may get an error message such as 'Cannot be rebuilt.

The original directory is too severely damaged' that is untrue.Actually, using Disk Utility 10.4.0 from the DVD may not be the best option. Apple doesn't explain clearly enough, but is explicit in using 10.4.2 or later Disk Utility, or, lacking that, use fsck from Single User Mode. DiskWarrior 3.0.x: Problems with FireWire 800 and SATA 150 or faster drivesA MacFixIt reader reports issues with running DiskWarrior 3.0.x on drives connected via FireWire 800 or SATA 150 or faster. We were breaking down one of our test G5s (Gestalt ID/PowerMac 7,3) in prep for installing and testing OS 10.4.5. We go through some pretty extensive preps to do this, from testing individual CPU components, regulating power and monitoring harmonics, etc., to applying the software in steps prescribed by both Apple's engineers and from our own work experience and research.

FWIW, my experience was different. 10.4.5, on my G5, booting from my internal backup boot drive to run DiskWarrior on my internal primary boot drive, but running DiskWarrior from a FW400 drive which has no bootable OS on it, DiskWarrior did the exact same thing, quits unexpectedly right before it presents you with the option of saving a report. On my iBook G4 with 10.4.5, booting from my backup FW400 drive to run DiskWarrior on the internal drive, get the exact same result. In both cases, DiskWarrior completes its work but quits afterwards, just like reported. Looks as if it is time for Alsoft to fix something. It may be this DW-Quicktime 7.0.4 problem:Here's the fix for that one:Open the Diskwarrior.app package, and then the Resources folder and change the name of the.aiff file from 'Complete.aiff' to 'Alert Complete.aiff'.-I've been having a different Diskwarrior 3.0.3 rev39 problem for a while now:I have it installed in /Applications/Utilities on my primary internal boot drive. Both my second internal drive and fw800 drives are clones of my primary boot drive. If I rebuild and replace the directories of the second internal and a fw800 drive, it renders both drives un-bootable in normal mode. A Safe Boot of either is required to boot them successfully. Thereafter, they will boot normally.

Diskwarrior Error Codes

Same with my primary boot drive; if I rebuild and replace the directory while booted from the second internal or a fw800 drive, it renders the drive un-bootable in normal mode, and requires a Safe Boot first before it can boot normally. The symptom is it hangs during boot at the gray screen with the Apple logo and doesn't produce the spinning gear. This also occured with my rev A G5 2GHz Dual but only with the external drives. Now it occurs with all system drives.
